As we move through March, Texas public schools are expected to observe specific, state-designated recognition days and months through age-appropriate learning experiences, campus activities, and community celebrations.
Texas History Month (Month of March)
March is officially designated as Texas History Month under Texas Government Code § 662.102
The statute states that the month shall be regularly observed by appropriate celebrations and activities in public schools to promote interest in and knowledge of Texas history. Texas History Month aligns directly with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), particularly in social studies.
Texas Girls in STEM Day – March 1
Under Texas Government Code § 662.073, March 1 is designated as Texas Girls in STEM Day. The law encourages appropriate ceremonies, programs, and activities in public schools to promote participation and awareness in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
Texas Independence Day & Texas Flag Day – March 2
March 2 commemorates the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836. Texas Independence Day is recognized as a state holiday under Texas Government Code § 662.003. Texas Flag Day is observed on March 2 under Texas Government Code § 662.048.
National School Breakfast Week – March 2 – 6
National School Breakfast Week is a time to celebrate the important role breakfast plays in supporting student learning and well-being. School breakfast gives students a strong start to the day by providing the nutrients they need to stay focused, energized, and ready to learn. By combining whole grains, fruits, milk, and lean proteins, each meal helps support both academic success and overall well-being.
At home, families can play an important part in National School Breakfast Week by encouraging children to stop by their school cafeteria for breakfast. Making breakfast a regular part of the school day helps students start each morning ready to learn, participate, and grow.
National Nutrition Month
March is National Nutrition Month, highlighting the critical role of school nutrition professionals. Our child nutrition teams prepare and serve balanced meals that meet federal and state guidelines while supporting student health, focus, and academic performance. Their work ensures that students are fueled each day for learning and growth.
Maintenance and Custodial Staff Appreciation Day
Observed on the first Friday in March, Maintenance Worker Appreciation recognizes the dedicated facilities and custodial professionals who ensure our campuses remain safe, clean, and operational. From preventative maintenance and infrastructure repairs to daily sanitation and safety compliance, these team members work behind the scenes to create learning environments where students and staff can thrive.
Spring Break – March 9–13
Our district will observe Spring Break from March 9 through March 13. Students and staff will return to regular instructional schedules following the break.
Texas public school calendars are developed in compliance with state instructional minute requirements outlined in Texas Education Code § 25.081, which establishes the required number of instructional minutes for the school year.
Spring Break provides an opportunity for rest and renewal while ensuring that required instructional time remains intact across the academic calendar.
National Athletic Training Month
National Athletic Training Month recognizes the athletic trainers and sports medicine professionals who safeguard student-athletes. These specialized staff members provide injury prevention, emergency response, rehabilitation support, and return-to-play oversight. Their expertise plays an essential role in maintaining student safety across extracurricular and competitive activities.
