As we step into a brand-new year, January brings a fresh start, a renewed sense of purpose and several important recognition days that help us honor leadership, celebrate diversity and acknowledge the resilience of others. #TeamCISD is proud to spotlight these observances as part of our commitment to learning, community and unity.
New Year’s Day — January 1
The new year offers an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of the past and to set new goals for the months ahead.
For many families, January 1 is a time for tradition, celebration and gathering with loved ones. As a school community, we embrace the spirit of new beginnings and look forward to supporting our students as they return refreshed and ready for a successful spring semester.
Teacher Work Day — January 6
On Tuesday, January 6, staff will participate in a Teacher Workday and students will not have school.
This day gives teachers time to finalize grades, prepare lesson plans, review student data and collaborate with colleagues to ensure a strong start to the new semester. We appreciate our families’ support and understanding as we dedicate this time to planning and preparation that directly benefits students.
Classes Resume — January 7
We are excited to welcome students back on January 7 as we begin the second half of the school year.
This return marks an important transition as students dive back into routines, new units of study, extracurricular activities and the momentum that leads us toward spring. We appreciate families for helping students come back rested, prepared and ready to learn.
Law Enforcement Appreciation Day — January 9
On January 9, we recognize Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, a time to honor the dedication and courage of the officers who help keep our community safe.
For our schools, this includes our school resource officer and local law enforcement partners who support safety initiatives and build positive relationships with students. Their presence, mentorship and service make a meaningful impact and we are grateful for their commitment to protecting our students and staff.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day — January 19th
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader whose vision of equality, justice and peaceful change transformed our nation.
This day encourages students and families to reflect on the values Dr. King championed—service, compassion and standing up for what is right. Many students participate in lessons, activities, or service opportunities that explore his contributions and inspire them to be positive forces within their own communities.
As a reminder, schools will be closed on January 19th in observance of the holiday.
Holocaust Remembrance Week — Week of January 27 (TEC §29.907)
Texas law requires all public schools to observe Holocaust Remembrance Week during the week that includes January 27, aligning with International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Under Texas Education Code §29.907, schools must provide age-appropriate instruction that highlights the history of the Holocaust, the power of moral courage and the importance of standing against hatred and injustice.
This week allows students to learn about real stories of resilience, bravery and humanity, while helping them understand why remembering history is essential to creating a more compassionate world. Our district is committed to honoring this observance with thoughtful lessons and activities appropriate for each grade level.
School Board Recognition Month — All of January
January is also School Board Recognition Month, a statewide celebration honoring the trustees who volunteer their time to serve our schools.
Our school board members play an essential role in shaping district goals, supporting academic success and ensuring that every student has access to high-quality learning opportunities. Their leadership and dedication help guide our district forward and we are grateful for their service throughout the year.
Many campuses will participate in board appreciation efforts, showcasing student work, messages of thanks, or special recognition projects.
A Month Filled With Purpose & Fresh Beginnings
January sets the tone for a year of growth, learning and community connection. From honoring local law enforcement to celebrating the legacy of Dr. King and the service of our board members, this month reminds us of the values that make our district strong.
We look forward to a fantastic semester and appreciate the partnership of our students, staff and families as we begin 2026 together. Thank you for being a valuable partner in supporting the future of our students. - #TeamCISD
