November 27th: Annually the fourth Thursday of November is observed for Thanksgiving Day. National History: Thanksgiving traces back to 1621 when the Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts celebrated a harvest feast with the Wampanoag people. It became a national holiday in 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday of November a day of “Thanksgiving and Praise.” In 1941, Congress officially fixed Thanksgiving as the fourth Thursday in November. Texas Connection: While there is no separate Texas-specific origin of Thanksgiving, early Texas settlers, including those from Spanish, German, and Anglo-American communities, celebrated harvest festivals that were similar in spirit to Thanksgiving. Today, Texans celebrate with family gatherings, feasts, and community events, reflecting the state’s diverse cultural heritage. Texas is home to the largest Thanksgiving Day parade west of the Mississippi in Houston, celebrating the holiday with floats, marching bands, and local performers. Government Code, Section 662.003(a)
